18 Apr 08 - SAFETY NOW STANDARD FOR UD

< Back to News

UD Trucks has taken a great leap forward in active safety with the inclusion of ABS as a standard feature across its entire truck range.

ABS anti-lock brakes enable drivers to maintain steering control under severe braking conditions in an emergency or under low traction conditions.

The braking is electronically monitored via a series of sensors that detect wheel lock up and modulate the braking pressure to prevent the wheels locking up.

Once the front steering wheels are locked, steering and control of the vehicle is lost and crash avoidance is severely reduced.

The new UD PK line up features a four-channel Wabco ABS system which offers rapid braking response and maximum retardation.

On the GW range UD engineers have also used the electronic control system to deliver EBS which controls both the ABS as well as ASR (Anti Slip Reduction) traction control as part of the standard package.

ASR enables the driver to maintain control of the truck in marginal traction conditions by minimising wheelspin as well as preventing brake lock up.The systems act in unison ensuring control and steering is maintained in the most testing conditions.

UD's MK medium duty models, which will be released in June, will also boast Easy Hill Start (EHS) as standard equipment.

"The combination of ABS and ASR gives the UD GW range a comprehensive active safety package aimed at keeping the truck out of an accident," said UD Trucks general manager, John Bushell.

"Our aim with the new UD range was to provide a high specification truck which lifts the safety of both the driver and other road-users to a new level.

"There is a strong demand across the industry for higher levels of safety which is in response to the need for greater Occupational Health and Safety(OH&S)," he said.

"Companies and particularly government bodies are increasingly specifying key safety features like ABS for their trucks," he added.

"Safety is an ongoing strategy for UD Trucks and more new technology safety systems are under development for inclusion on future UD models."
