18 Apr 08 - NEW UD PK9 AND PK10 DELIVERS SAFER, CLEANER MORE COMFORTABLE AND BETTER PERFORMING TRUCK

< Back to News

The new UD medium-duty range has made its Australian debut with the launch of the new PK9 and PK10 ahead of the launch of MK models later in the year.

The PK9 and PK10 directly replace the previous PK265 model, while the PK245 variant has been dropped from the line up.

UD's new PK medium-duty range delivers power and torque - with improved fuel economy and lower emissions thanks to its newly developed electronically controlled common rail diesel with VNT variable geometry turbocharger.

A locally fitted FUPS system will also be available on the new PK.

The PK's safety credentials are enhanced with an extensive standard equipment list headlined by ABS anti-lock brakes, cruise control, and air conditioning along with many other features.

Other standard features include power windows and remote operated keyless central locking.

The updated PK range comprises two models, the PK9 and PK10, with four variants offering either UD's own six speed manual transmission or an Eaton sourced nine-speed manual.

New PK models offer a choice of four wheelbase options ranging from 4500mm to 6450mm on the PK10 and three options from 4500mm to 6050mm on the PK9. The longest PK10 wheelbase option now allows a body of up to 9 metres in length, delivering a 14 pallet load capability.

Both PK models have a 6500kg front axle capacity, providing operators with a valuable 500kg payload increase benefiting productivity and efficiency.

The new models feature new internal cab design with new colour trim, a wrap around dash, a redesigned and more stylish instrument cluster and new mirrors.
Due to the latest ADR 83/00 noise standards the PK cab is now quieter thanks to better insulation and design while the redesign of the exhaust moving from the old vertical stack to a new rear facing under truck exhaust discharge has also reduced noise levels.

PK9 is equipped with UD's tried and proven steel leaf spring rear suspension, while PK10 offers Hendrickson Airbag WABCO remote electronically controlled rear suspension. Both models offer a GVM of 16.04 tonnes and a GCM of 20.5 tonnes.

The PK's new 7.6 litre overhead cam four-valve per cylinder engine delivers the same power but 10 percent more torque and at lower revs than the model it replaces, ensuring better fuel efficiency and lower pollution levels.

The electronically controlled common rail direct-injection engine utilises the latest technology variable-nozzle turbocharger and high efficiency intercooler to maximise power, torque and flexibility while ensuring lower emissions.

The new PK engine is also significantly quieter than the one it replaces with reduced noise and vibration resulting in a significant reduction in driver fatigue.

The new UD PK9 and PK10 utilise water-cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) as the primary emission reduction system, meeting and exceeding the recently mandated ADR80/02 emission regulations.

Research by UD found that the EGR system is ideal for use in a medium-duty application while Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is better suited in heavy-duty high output applications.

EGR re-circulates a percentage of the truck's exhaust gas back into the combustion chamber through a water-cooled heat exchanger which in turn lowers combustion temperature by cooling the exhaust gas before it re-enters the combustion chamber, with the result being significant reduction in emissions.

The new engine utilises an electronically controlled variable-nozzle turbocharger (VNT) which can adjust the pitch of the turbocharger intake fins to ensure precise control of turbine speed and optimal turbo boost pressure. The VNT adjusts the speed and the angle of the driving exhaust gas, thus changing the intake impeller speed according to the engine RPM and power demand.

The variable nozzle turbo also offers another advantage by assisting the efficiency of the EGR system. It ensures a highly efficient, cleaner and complete combustion process across the entire rev range.

The result is an engine that easily meets and exceeds Euro 4 which requires trucks to reduce PM emissions by 98 percent and harmful NOx emissions by over 30 percent.

According to UD Trucks general manager, John Bushell, the new engines are remarkable for delivering lower emissions and fuel consumption while offering major gains in performance and driveablility.

"New technologies have enabled UD engineers to develop a medium-duty range that is significantly better in every way, producing more power and increased fuel efficiency," said John Bushell.

The new PK range also offers an optional Australian designed and built Rear Engine PTO offering a 225Nm continuous capacity and a 1 to 1.08 ratio.

ENGINE

The J08E-TE engine used in the new PK range has a capacity of 7.684 litres, with a compression ratio of 18.5:1. It features a highly efficient four valves per cylinder design, with swirl-type inlet ports and a central injector nozzle.

The new engine has been designed with a 112 x 130mm bore and stroke which gives it an under-square design to deliver maximise torque.

The result is maximum torque of 794Nm produced at 1500rpm while maximum power of 260 horsepower is produced at 2500rpm. The engine has a maximum governed speed of 2550rpm while it is equipped with a pneumatically operated exhaust brake.

Lubrication to the engine is handled by a force fed gear pump with a flat tube type oil cooler and a replacement element full flow and bypass oil filter and an 11 litre capacity.

The high pressure electronically controlled common rail fuel injection system is fed from the standard 200 litre steel fuel tank via replaceable primary and secondary fuel filters while the engine's air intake is via a high mounted right hand side intake snorkel and single paper element air filters.

The electronically controlled selective cooled EGR emission system is integrated along with the muffler and catalytic converter into the under chassis mounted horizontal exhaust which discharges rear facing discharge under the truck.

CAB DESIGN AND FEATURES

The forward control PK cab is spring suspended with shock absorbers delivering a smooth and quieter ride for driver and cab occupants. The cab is designed to meet the latest crashworthiness standards.

It features a torsion bar cab lift system and a front opening inspection panel for easy maintenance, inspection and repair.

A new air dam front bumper and grille design has improved aerodynamic efficiency and engine cooling.

Inside the new quieter, redesigned PK cab is a fully integrated dash design with a stylish wrap around instrument cluster which has been ergonomically designed for better driver efficiency and comfort.

TRANSMISSIONS

The new UD PK9 and PK10 both offer a choice of two manual transmissions, a new larger UD six-speed or a new higher capacity Eaton sourced nine-speed.

The UD MPS63B six-speed transmission offers synchro on second through sixth gear and shifting is operated via an air assisted mechanical remote control system. A Power Take Off (PTO) opening is located on the left hand side of the transmission and is rated at 300Nm@ 1.1 nominal ratio.

The MPS63B offers a massive 100 percent increase in PTO capacity up from 147Nm on the previous PK models to 294Nm on the new versions.

The power shift mechanism on the new PK (six-speed only) dramatically reduces shift effort for the driver, further combating fatigue particularly after a long day at the wheel. On average shift effort has been reduced by around 50 percent.

The Eaton FS-6109A is a nine-speed full synchro transmission with a mechanical remote control shift with left hand side front, bottom and rear counter shaft transmission PTO openings with a 300Nm cap.

An automatic transmission will be available during the fourth-quarter of 2008.

BRAKES

The new PK range is equipped with a full 4-channel Wabco ABS anti-lock brake system. Braking is handled by full air brake with dual air-line system and internal expanding S-cam type brakes.

The drum diameter both front and rear is 410mm with a total lining area of 6,128 sq cm.

The parking brake is operated via a pneumatically controlled spring brake operated on the drive axle.

STEERING

The new PK range uses a tried and proven recirulating screw type steering box with hydraulic- power assistance. The variable gear steering ratio operates between 18.8 to 1 and 16.1 to 1.

The steering column features a tilt and telescopic adjustment with a steering lock and a 460mm diameter wheel.

ELECTRICS

The growing need for additional electrical power for a range of ancillary devices and accessories including GPS navigations systems, mobile phones, AV systems and portable fridges has resulted in UD engineers upgrading the 24volt power system on the PK range.

The new PK9 and PK10 are now equipped with a higher capacity 60 amp alternator, a 20 percent increase on the older PK265. The trucks feature two 12 volt 120Ah batteries.

WHEELS AND TYRES
The new PK range comes equipped with one piece steel disc wheel rims measuring 8.25"x 22.5" and with a 165mm offset. The ISO 10 stud wheels are fitted with 11R 22.5 - 16PR 148/145L tyres with dual tyres mounted on the rear and singles on the front axles.

AXLES

UD FA50 and UD RS1A axles are used at the front and rear respectively on the new PK 9 models while the PK10 air bag suspension model features a UD RA1A axle at the rear and the same UD FA50 unit on the front.

The front UD FA50 axle is a reverse "ELLIOT" type drop forged steel "I" section beam with a front axle capacity of 6500kg.

The rear UD RS1A and RA1A axles are fully floating pressed steel banjo housing type with a capacity of 11500kg. They use a single reduction hypoid gear rear differential.

SUSPENSION

The PK9 utilises well proven multi-leaf springs at the front mated to telescopic double acting shock absorbers while at the rear semi elliptic leaf springs with a helper is used, again mated to telescopic double acting shock absorbers.

The front springs are anchored at the front and use a shackle at the rear and are 1400mm long and 80mm wide. The spring pack uses nine springs and has a capacity of 6500kg.

At the rear the nine leaf main spring is 1600mm long and 80mm wide while the eight leaf helper is 1100mm long and 80mm wide. The rear springs feature an anchor at the front and shackle fixing at the rear.
